endangered breeds

Not only wildlife is endangered by extinction. The same applies to domestic and farm animals. Breeds, which could once be seen everywhere, are very rare today.

There are many reasons for this, but the most important factor is economy. Due to staying competitive, companies focus on massive production and on breeds with the highest possible output (meat, milk, wool). As a consequence, many breeds vanish. What is not needed is not being bred any more.

Why is preservation of these breeds so important?

  • Many breeds were bred for special actualities (special regions, conditions, etc.). In a special way, they reflect the historical development and so they are historically and culturally relevant.
  • Preservation of the genetic diversity.
  • Many of the rare breeds are more robust than the common high-power farm breeds and so they are more resistible to diseases.
